Why it is important to be a blood donor in Ukraine

Let`s magine: one donation – and saved three human lives. Blood donation is not only a manifestation of kindness, but also a real support of the health care system. In Ukraine, thousands of patients need blood components every day. It is obtained only thanks to those who decided to donate blood and help others. In this article, we will explain why being a donor is important, safe and honorable.

Blood donation is an opportunity to save lives

From one donation, three components are obtained at once:

  • red blood cells – used for massive blood loss, anemia;
  • platelets – save cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy;
  • plasma – used for burns, injuries, surgical operations.

None of these components can be synthesized artificially. The only way to provide patients is voluntary blood donation.

Blood deficiency: why is this a problem?

Despite the development of medical technologies, blood deficiency in Ukraine is chronic. The need for periods of hostilities, natural disasters or during epidemics is especially acute. Constantly needed:

  • blood components for resuscitation;
  • platelets for cancer centers;
  • plasma for military hospitals.

Blood is needed every day – in every area, in every hospital. Stocks are stored only for a certain time, so donations should be regular.

Being a donor is safe and useful

The blood donation procedure in modern transfusiology centers is absolutely safe. Sterile disposable equipment is used. Before donation, a free examination is carried out:

  • measurement of pressure, temperature;
  • checking hemoglobin levels;
  • analysis for underlying infections.

In addition, regular donation contributes to:

  • renewal of blood cells;
  • prevention of cardiovascular diseases;
  • improved metabolism.

It is also a great opportunity to check the state of health for free.

Donation is a manifestation of solidarity and civic responsibility

You don’t have to be a doctor or a military man to help others. It is enough to come to the blood center and share what you have – health.

In times of war, donation is also an act of support for the country’s defense. Blood transfusions often save the lives of wounded soldiers on the front lines.

How to become a blood donor?

The process is simple and straightforward:

  1. Find the nearest blood service center or mobile point.
